Examine a comprehensive set of frameworks and concepts for developing strategy in a community hospital, using the case example of Emerson Hospital. Discuss key strategic issues, including how to determine the difference between strategic issues and those that are more operational or tactical. The role of senior management will be presented, and the process for engaging board and medical staff will be discussed.
You will learn to:
- Differentiate between strategy and planning.
- Understand frameworks and concepts required to guide a successful strategic planning process in a complex, highly competitive environment.
- Recognize the importance of separating strategic issues from the myriad operational/tactical issues confronting hospitals on a daily basis.
- Value the roles of trustees, senior managers, and physicians.
- Appreciate the importance of linking strategy to financial and human resources.
