SHSMD 2009 Annual Conference
Scholarship Program

Are budget cuts preventing you from attending
the SHSMD Annual Conference?

Have you always wanted to attend the
SHSMD Conference but never been able to?

Do you need tuition assistance to attend the
SHSMD Conference?

The Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development is pleased to offer tuition assistance to qualifying professionals in healthcare marketing, planning, public relations, communications, physician relations or business development to attend the 2009 Annual Educational Conference in Orlando, FL, September 29–October 3. The scholarships are funded through the SHSMD Foundation in the Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET).

SHSMD will award up to 40 tuition scholarships covering the full conference registration fee, up to two optional preconference workshops and the “We’re Going Coconuts” networking event. The scholarships do not cover travel costs (transportation, hotel, meals and related expenses). These costs are the responsibility of the scholarship recipient.

To apply: Applicants must submit a completed application to SHSMD via email (shsmd@aha.org), fax (312/422-4579) or mail: SHSMD Scholarship, American Hospital Association, One N. Franklin Street, Suite 2800, Chicago, IL 60606 no later than Friday, July 17. Incomplete applications and applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

Applicants MUST Meet the Following Criteria:

  • Be currently employed in a hospital, healthcare system or organization providing marketing, planning, public relations, communication, business development or physician relations OR be able to document employment in a hospital, healthcare system or organization providing marketing, planning, public relations, communication, business development or physician services within the past 18 months
  • Be a SHSMD member OR be recommended by a SHSMD member
  • Be a first-time SHSMD Annual Conference attendee who can document financial need OR be a SHSMD member who has attended four of the last five SHSMD Annual Conferences and can demonstrate financial need

Applications MUST Include:

  • A statement of need/personal statement explaining why the applicant wants to attend the conference
  • A recommendation from current employer, client or recent employer showing relevant work experience and responsibilities and the need for professional development
  • Signed documentation from CEO or manager that establishes financial need OR an explanation of financial need for those between jobs or self-employed
  • A signed statement of intent to attend

Other Considerations:

  • All applicants must complete the SHSMD Annual Conference Scholarship Application Form. No other form of application will be considered.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Tuition scholarship recipients will be required to provide proof of confirmed travel arrangements (transportation and hotel) within two weeks of notification of the tuition award.
  • Only one tuition scholarship per organization will be given.
  • Applicants awarded tuition scholarships in 2009 may not apply for SHSMD scholarships in 2010.
  • All tuition scholarships will be awarded at the sole discretion of SHSMD.

Tuition scholarship recipients will be notified via email on or before Friday, August 7, 2009.
