The How and Why of the U.S. News and World Report Rankings
SESSION NUMBER S5

Avery Comarow
U.S. News & World Report
Washington, DC

Love them if your hospital shows up, hate them if it doesn’t, the “America’s Best Hospitals” annual rankings are a reality. Why does U.S. News & World Report publish them? Why doesn’t U.S. News show how well hospitals do in specific procedures like bypass surgery instead of ranking hospitals in broad specialties, such as “heart and heart surgery”? What’s the source of the data? How does the public respond? How do hospitals respond? Avery Comarow, who has directed the rankings since they appeared in 1990, will conduct a behind-the-scenes tour, answering these questions and many more, then opening the floor to a Q&A that is sure to be spirited.
