Hospital Performance Information

August 2008

On Tuesday, August 19, Hospital Compare, the Hospital Quality Alliance’s (HQA) website, was updated to include the following information:

  • New 30-day mortality data for pneumonia patients
  • Updated 30-day mortality data for heart attack and heart failure patients
  • For some hospitals, two additional clinical measures for pediatric asthma patients

This quality advisory, released jointly by AHA, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the Federation of American Hospitals, supplements the information provided in a quality advisory dated July 2. This advisory includes answers to tough questions and other information about this data release.

AHA and SHSMD encourage your hospital to take advantage of this opportunity to talk with your patients, your community, and the media about what your hospital is doing to improve patient care.

May 2008

On Wednesday, May 21, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) ran ads in newspapers across the country promoting Hospital Compare. The ad, which ran in 55 media markets, featured a list of hospitals in each market and their performance on two measures available on Hospital Compare: a clinical process measure and a patient experience measure from HCAHPS.

March 2008

On Friday, March 28, information about patients’ experience of hospital care from the HCAHPS survey was shared publicly for the first time on HQA’s website, Hospital Compare.

To help SHSMD members respond to the release of patient experience data, we have collected resources to help you talk about such data and your hospital’s performance with the media, your patients, and your community.
