  • American Academy of Ophthalmology

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in the US. It has no noticeable symptoms in its early stages, and vision loss progresses at such a gradual rate that people affected by the condition are often unaware of it until their sight has already been compromised. During Glaucoma Awareness Month, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) advises the public that the best defense against developing glaucoma-related blindness is by having routine, comprehensive eye exams.

January has been designated as National Blood Donor Month to encourage people to give or pledge to give blood at least two or more times a year. Blood is typically in short supply during the winter months — especially January— due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather, and illness. A reduction in donor turnout can cause blood shortages around the country.

  • March of Dimes

Birth defects are structural changes that affect one or more parts of the body (e.g. heart, brain, foot). They develop most often during the first three months of pregnancy, when a baby’s organs are forming and can cause problems in overall health, how the body develops and functions. About 1 in 33 babies in the U.S. is born with a birth defect each year. The goal of National Birth Defects Awareness Month, held in January, is to generate greater awareness that birth defects are common, costly and critical, and to offer specific actions that women and health care professionals can take to prevent birth defects.

  • International Society for Bipolar Disorders

The vision of World Bipolar Day (WBD) is to bring world awareness to bipolar disorders and to eliminate social stigma and discrimination. Through international collaboration, the goal of WBD is to bring diverse populations around the world information about bipolar disorders that will educate and improve sensitivity towards the illness, including access to the latest research and the best treatments. We will continue to officially observe WBD on March 30th. However, in the spirit of honoring the diverse experiences that come with a global celebration like WBD, it is important that we also acknowledge cultural, spiritual, and regional traditions that may occur during this time. We recognize that only observing WBD on a single day may limit inclusion of diverse communities. We understand that some WBD participants may need to make accommodations to host an event in a way that honors both their personal commitments as well as the needs of the communities they wish to engage. Therefore, we emphasize that any events related to WBD held within the period surrounding March 30th will be celebrated and promoted. Indeed, the values of WBD must be enacted out throughout the year in our thoughts, words and actions.

  • Arthritis Foundation

World Arthritis Day, established in 1996, is observed each year on October 12. Coordinated in the United States by the Arthritis Foundation, the event joins together people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases from around the world to raise awareness and reduce the impact of arthritis. Although it’s one of the most common diseases in the world, there is no cure for arthritis, and many people are unaware of its potent physical, emotional and economic impact. We’re here for everyone living with arthritis — no one has to go it alone.

  • Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA)

In 1983, nearly 20 years before he died of Alzheimer’s disease, President Ronald Reagan helped to create greater awareness of the disease, declaring November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. This is a time to heighten awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and show support for the more than 6.2 million Americans living with it. There are a number of quick and easy ways you can help raise awareness, show support, and fight Alzheimer’s disease, such as wearing teal. The next time you see someone dressed in teal, remember the more than 6 million people living with Alzheimer’s and the help they need.

November is Prematurity Awareness Month®, March of Dimes’ global spotlight on the current state of maternal and infant health in the U.S. and around the world. We know it’s possible for women to have healthy pregnancies, but the U.S. remains among the most dangerous high-income nations to give birth. In fact, data from the CDC shows a 3% spike in infant mortality from 2021 to 2022, which has remained unchanged, indicating preterm birth as a key factor.
