Redesign the Delivery System: Purchase of Retail Pharmacy Enhances Services to the Community

The Value Initiative

Hospitals and health systems are finding innovative ways to adopt retail strategies in order to expand care beyond the hospital walls. This profile from American Hospital Association’s Value Initiative describes how Northern Maine Medical Center (NMMC), a small rural hospital, purchased a local retail pharmacy. This purchase enabled it to integrate patients’ medical records so pharmacists have a full record of all medications and allergies; ensure that outpatients have the prescriptions that they need when they are discharged; and provide free education and wellness services to the community at the pharmacy site. The profile also describes the transition process before, during and after the purchase.
