SHSMD Elects 2013 President-elect, Directors

Mark Parrington Will Lead AHA Strategy Society in 2014

Chicago (September 6, 2012) — The Society for Healthcare Strategy & Market Development (SHSMD), a 4,000-member personal membership group of the American Hospital Association, has elected Mark Parrington, a healthcare planning executive from Denver, Colo., as president-elect of the SHSMD board of directors, effective Jan. 1, 2013. Parrington’s term as president of the organization of healthcare strategy professionals will begin on Jan. 1, 2014.

President-elect designate Parrington is vice president of strategic transactions and development at Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI), a faith-based system that operates in 19 states and includes 76 hospitals; 40 long-term care, assisted- and residential-living facilities; two community health-services organizations; two accredited nursing colleges; and home health agencies. At CHI Parrington leads the strategic transitions team and serves as the primary strategy resource for negotiations, evaluations and other activities supporting major CHI transactions such as acquisitions, divestitures, partnerships and joint ventures. He has held executive leadership positions at a number of health care organizations, including Sutter Health, Sacramento, Cal.; Centegra Health System, Crystal Lake, Ill.; Cleveland Clinic Health System–Western Region, Cleveland, Ohio; and Mercy, St. Louis, Mo.

A member of SHSMD since 1996, Parrington has served on the board of directors since 2006 and as chairman of the Finance Committee since 2009. In addition, he has been a member of the Annual Conference Planning Committee (2012 and 2011), the Annual Conference Tuition Scholarship Review Panel (2009) and the Futurescan 2007 Steering Committee (2006). He has served on the governing boards of a variety of healthcare organizations.

In addition, four healthcare leaders were elected to the 17-member SHSMD board of directors for three-year terms beginning Jan. 1, 2013. They are:

  • Jeffrey Kraut, senior vice president, strategy, North Shore–LIJ Health System, Manhasset, N.Y.; and associate dean, Hofstra North Shore–LIJ School of Medicine, Hempstead, N.Y.
  • Terri McNorton (reelection), assistant vice president, marketing, Ochsner Health System, New Orleans, La.
  • Ruth Padilla (reelection), senior director, strategy and marketing, Division II, Community Health Systems, Franklin, Tenn.
  • Burl Stamp, principal, PYA, St. Louis, Mo.
